Burnout and workplace stressors

Workplaces around the world are facing a mental health crisis. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), depression and anxiety disorders are the primary cause of illness and disability worldwide. In the past, workplace design prioritised revenue growth over employee health, resulting in steep hierarchies, tight deadlines, and unsustainable pressure. The result has been the emergence of various “job stressors” or “psychosocial hazards” in workplaces, which can cause depression, anxiety, and burnout in employees.

Managing workplace psychosocial hazards

The WHO defines burnout as an organisational syndrome, rather than a psychological disorder. It is the result of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

Based on decades of research, Safe Work Australia released a model Code of Practice in 2022 that identifies fifteen psychosocial hazards in the workplace. These include low job control, high work demands, poor support, low recognition and reward, harassment and bullying, plus many others.

Businesses benefit from proactively addressing workplace psychosocial hazards, preventing negative impacts on employee health whilst maintaining excellent productivity.

Let’s Talk utilises the latest research to guide businesses, senior leaders, and all team members on the steps they can take to manage psychosocial hazards at work. Our wellness software program empowers individuals and creates a thriving business culture.
